Tomorrow, August 3rd is National Watermelon Day!Sweet, juicy, and made up of over 90% water, did you know that the world-record heaviest watermelon weighed in at just over 350 pounds? That’s about as heavy as a reindeer…Yikes! Have fun with the learning activities below and until next week, remember: “You’re one in a melon!”
Literacy Summer is a time of new adventures and memory-making. Keep your stories forever by publishing your very own books. This writing paper includes boxes for illustrations and fully lined pages for rich details. (Pro-Tip: Keep them handy during the school year and use the pages for self-scoring!)
Math I have a burning question for you. Have you ever tried a puzzle that seemed easy, but once attempted, had you stuck-stuck-stuck? These matchstick logic puzzles seem like no-brainers, but good luck, you’ll need it!
Science In 2008 at the age of five, Samuel Houghton became the youngest inventor for his “Sweeping Device with Two Heads” invention. He saw his father sweeping the backyard with two different brooms, one for leaves and one for dust, and instead took two brooms and used a rubber band to connect them together.
What incredible inventions do you have bubbling in that amazing brain of yours? Use this template to think them through!
Social Studies This resource is a colorful, gentle way to discuss human rights, equality, and core values in a student-led way that allows the expression of an independent voice. Have your trusted adults be the active listeners; dictate your thoughts and have them simply transcribe. There is so much value in your trusted adults hearing your honest thoughts straight from your heart.
Social-Emotional Wellness Let’s take a fun look inward this week—All About ME! Take some time to think and draw all of your favorite things. I wonder how many things you have in common with other students? If you haven’t had a chance to sign up for a summer workshop yet, that would be a chance to meet new students and make some new friends!
If you’d like to share a copy of any of your summer work on Sage Oak’s social media pages, please send a copy tosummerschool@sageoak.education! We are excited to showcase your work!
