Each month, we will share social-emotional learning lessons and tools that you can share with your student. We hope that doing so will assist you and your students in managing emotions, setting and achieving positive goals, feeling and showing empathy for others, establishing and maintaining positive relationships, and making healthy decisions. While these lesson topics are shared with our seniors (fall semester) and juniors (spring semester) taking our College & Career Readiness course, we hope these monthly resources benefit all our students.
This month’s lesson is on Self Advocacy & Resourcefulness. Self-advocacy is the idea that “I am in charge of my own life. I am responsible for whether I am happy or sad. I can choose how I react to other people or situations. I am in the driver’s seat.” When you advocate for yourself, you are seeking resources to support your success. You are not making an excuse or trying to “get out” of doing something. You’re looking for a solution. Resourcefulness is the ability to overcome difficulties by being prepared, looking for a solution (not a way out). Just as important as being able to advocate for yourself is learning how to be resourceful. Students need to know where they can look when they need resources and support. Lesson Idea: create a visual support board document, poster, or have a conversation: Who helps you with life’s twists and turns? It addresses the issue…it’s ok to not know, but it’s not okay to not try. Remind your students of the various people and support groups they have in place to help them when they encounter twists and turns in life. Don’t forget to include your Sage Oak teacher! |
