Mental Health Matters
Last month we discussed the topic of goal setting as an important Social Emotional Learning lesson. Building on this idea, this month’s Counseling Corner focuses on the idea of time management. Life can be overwhelming and stressful.

There’s never going to be enough time in our day to get everything done and at times, we are going to feel like we’re falling short. Self-management refers to impulse control, stress management, and self-discipline. This starts by being realistic about your most important priorities and tasks. Lesson idea: Grab (or draw) a jar and a few big rocks. Write down your most important tasks for the day (or week) on your rocks (ie. studying for your biology test, completing your college essays, sending grandma a birthday card, etc.) and add these things to your jar first. These things are your priorities. Give yourself permission to focus on these big things first and the self-compassion or grace to say no to tasks that don’t fit in your jar. Starting every day (or week) by adding your big rocks first will help you feel more balanced and less stressed.

Sage Oak Letter Drive
Embrace this year’s theme of “I Can” by participating in Sage Oak’s Letter Drive. Our goal is to send at least 100 letters in each county Sage Oak serves- Ventura, Los Angeles, San Bernardino, Riverside, Orange, Inyo, Kern, and San Diego. The Sage Oak Letter Drive will start on November 16th and last until December 16th.

How to Participate:

1. Write a letter of thanks, draw a picture, create a card, or find another creative way to encourage, thank, or share kindness with someone in your community. It could be to an essential worker, people serving our country, first responders (police, sheriff, firefighters, etc), community helpers, senior citizens, children’s hospitals, or hospital patients.

2. Help us reach our goal by showing us how you participated when you fill out this survey. If your student sends more than one letter, please fill out the form for each letter sent.

3. Send your letter in the mail or drop it off.

We will update the Sage Oak community on our progress as you all help us track your letters!

Did you know that using i-Ready for 45 minutes or more in each subject per week is great practice? Take the strive for 45 math challenge! K-8 students are encouraged to participate. Ask your teacher for details!
