Counseling Corner As we adjust to changes in our daily lives, grown-ups are feeling added stressors as are kids and teens too! All students, kindergartners to high school seniors, may need your help to calm their worries.
Here are a few helpful tips: 1. Combat fears with facts. Teach kids why we wash our hands and why we need to stay home. And equally important, teach them how to distinguish truth from rumors on the internet. The next time they get a Snapchat message saying the city is closing, we want them to ask “says who?” and you can teach them that. 2. Anxiety can arise from a lack of knowledge. Pretending COVID-19 doesn’t exist can cause additional anxiety and stress. Explain what is happening and what this means for them. 3. Encourage virtual connections. While it is an adjustment, continue attending any classes offered virtually. Utilize online options such as Zoom, Skype and Google Hangouts where kids can meet up and check-in on another. Charades, books clubs, show and tell, BINGO, and a sing-along are a few “meeting” ideas.
